Imam Sadiq ع quoted Imam Ali ع “Note traditions along with their references. If they are correct, you will share in the reward in the Hereafter, and if they are wrong, the sin will be for the original authors to whom you referred.”

  1. Salaam Shiekh, I just had a question about this narration. Does the actual translation/narration use the word “references?” because during the time of Imam Ali (as), wasn’t the only hadith book Kitab Sulaym ibn Qays? So I was wondering why the word reference would be used if books of hadith weren’t really written yet? I’m assuming maybe what is meant is the chain of narrators? But can you clear this up for me? Thank you!

    1. Wa alaykum salam,
The original hadith is as follows:
:Α قال: قال أمير المؤمنين Α 753 . في إسناد الحديث عن أبي عبد الله
اذآروا الحديث بإسناده فإن آان حقّاً آنتم شرآاءه في الآخرة،
      وإنْ آان باطلاً فإنّ الوِزر على صاحبه.

It says to mention the Hadith with its Isnad.
